🔍 THE BREAKING CASE: The Murder of Tania Wise

In February 2018, 23-year-old Tania Wise was found dead in a roadside ditch along Indrio Road in St. Lucie County, Florida. She was nine months pregnant, just days from giving birth to a baby whose father was Jose Soto-Escalera, a 49-year-old married man who led a double life between his family and his affair with Wise.

For nearly two years, Soto-Escalera had maintained the secret relationship. When Tania refused to terminate her pregnancy, he became increasingly controlling and angry. Prosecutors later revealed that his phone history showed disturbing searches in the days leading up to her death: “how to dispose of a body,” “how to delete messages permanently,” and “how long it takes for a body to decompose.”

On the night of February 2, 2018, Tania left home to meet him for what she told a friend would be their “final conversation.” She never returned. The next morning, a passerby discovered her body in a ditch. The medical examiner reported blunt-force trauma and signs of strangulation, confirming a violent struggle. Her unborn child also died at the scene.

Cell-tower data and recovered texts placed Soto-Escalera near the location at the exact time of the murder. DNA from under Tania’s fingernails matched him. He was arrested weeks later and charged with two counts of first-degree murder; one for Tania and one for her unborn child.

⚖ THE TRIAL & SENTENCE

During the 2025 trial, the prosecution presented a damning timeline built from Soto-Escalera’s own digital footprint. Investigators testified that he had:

• Attempted to erase message threads between himself and Tania.
• Cleared GPS logs from his phone the night of the crime.
• Searched for cleaning supplies and disposal methods just hours before her death.

Jurors also saw threatening messages he’d sent to Tania:

“You’re ruining my life. You’ll regret this.”

After deliberating for less than four hours, the jury unanimously recommended the death penalty. On September 30, 2025, Judge Robert Belanger sentenced him to death, calling the killing “especially heinous, atrocious, and cruel.”
