BREAKING NEWS
Man Sentenced to Over Two Decades for Killing Pregnant Wife Arnima Hayat in North Parramatta

Meraj Zafar has been jailed for 21-and-a-half years
Meraj Zafar, who pleaded guilty to the murder of his pregnant wife, Arnima Hayat, has been sentenced to 21 and a half years in prison. The gruesome case, which unfolded in January 2022, left the community shocked and her family devastated.
A Disturbing Crime Police discovered Ms. Hayat’s body in a North Parramatta unit after a relative raised concerns. Zafar had placed her body in a bathtub filled with hydrochloric acid in an attempt to dispose of it. The 23-year-old later admitted to smothering Ms. Hayat, claiming the act was driven by fear of her leaving him.
Court records revealed Zafar purchased 20 liters of hydrochloric acid shortly after the murder and searched online for "Can hydrochloric acid burn through skin?" He later bought additional containers of the chemical to pour over her body, which had to be identified through DNA testing.

Police were called to the unit block after a relative raised concerns.
A Tragic Story of Abuse Ms. Hayat’s friends disclosed that she regretted her private marriage to Zafar in 2021, citing his abusive behavior. She confided in friends about being "bashed" but never filed a police complaint. In one text to a friend, she wrote, “I have nobody except you,” to which the friend replied, “You have no choice. You have to stay with him.”
The court also heard that Zafar had previously threatened her father, leading to an Apprehended Violence Order being issued against him.
The Aftermath Zafar fled the scene after the crime but later surrendered to the police. His mother had called emergency services, reporting that her son had been involved in a violent altercation with his wife. When authorities arrived, they found a strong chemical odor in the apartment but Zafar had already left.
During sentencing, Justice Deborah Sweeney described Zafar’s actions as deliberate and calculated. She emphasized that Ms. Hayat, pregnant at the time, was killed because Zafar could not handle the prospect of her leaving him.

Abu Hayat, the father of Arnima Hayat,
Heartbreaking Impact In powerful victim impact statements, Ms. Hayat’s family expressed their enduring pain. Her father, Abu Hayat, shared, “I miss my daughter every day. I see her face in my dreams. He burned the face I used to kiss every night.”
Her mother collapsed in the courtroom after the sentencing, overwhelmed with grief.
Zafar will be eligible for parole in 2038, but for Ms. Hayat’s family, the wounds remain deep, and the loss, immeasurable.

Myth: Serial killers are a modern phenomenon. | Fact: Serial killers have existed throughout history, long before the term was coined in the 20th century. |
Historical records reveal cases of serial murder dating back centuries. For instance, Gilles de Rais, a 15th-century French nobleman, is believed to have killed over 100 children. In 16th-century Hungary, Countess Elizabeth Báthory was accused of torturing and killing dozens of young women.
The difference today is not the emergence of serial killers but the advancement in forensic science, media coverage, and psychological profiling that bring these cases to public attention. This historical context reminds us that such atrocities are not unique to modern times but have long been a dark part of human history.

Behavioral Patterns Can Expose the Killer
Studying a criminal’s behavior before, during, and after a crime can be a game-changer in solving cases. Behavioral analysis helps investigators understand motives, predict next moves, and even identify suspects.
Take the case of the “BTK” Killer, Dennis Rader. For decades, he evaded capture by blending into his community, but his need for recognition became his downfall. Rader taunted police and the media with letters detailing his crimes.
By analyzing his need for control and attention, profilers predicted he would eventually make a mistake and he did. Rader sent a floppy disk to police, believing it was untraceable, but investigators used metadata to link it to him, leading to his arrest.
The takeaway? A killer’s actions often reveal more than they realize. Behavioral analysis is a powerful tool that can turn even the smallest misstep into a breakthrough.
Crime Statistic of the Week
Over 80% of Stalking Victims Know Their Stalker
While stalking is often portrayed as the work of strangers, the reality is much more unsettling. Research shows that over 80% of stalking victims are targeted by someone they know be it a former partner, acquaintance, or even a coworker. This personal connection adds layers of complexity to the crime, as victims often face emotional manipulation and fear of retaliation.
The Rebecca Schaeffer Case
A tragic example is the stalking and murder of actress Rebecca Schaeffer. While her killer, Robert John Bardo, was initially a stranger, his obsessive behavior escalated after tracking her through public records. The case highlighted the dangers of stalkers gaining access to personal information, even when victims are unaware of the danger lurking nearby.
This statistic underscores the importance of recognizing warning signs and taking proactive measures to ensure safety. Stalking often begins within familiar circles, making awareness and early intervention crucial in preventing escalation.
